A teenager was arrested for causing criminal damage in Hythe before he then spat at his arresting officer, police say.

On Friday, November 8, officers were called to the High Street following reports of a male causing damage to business doors by smashing the glass.

Police located and arrested an 18-year-old man for causing criminal damage.

The suspect was later arrested again after he spat on the arresting officer whilst en route to custody, police confirmed.

In a statement on the Waterside Police Facebook page, a spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: “Sadly assaults on police officers are not uncommon and spitting is particularly unpleasant.

“Please also bear in mind that the vast majority of assaults on police officers both on the Waterside Team and neighbouring teams are not posted on this page.

“We are also aware that criminal damage and anti-social behaviour in Hythe is an ongoing issue, and I hope that this incident provides some reassurance that when reported to us, we will look to attend and deal with those committing crime on your high street robustly.”

The suspect spent the night in custody whilst the police investigation continues.
