A Romsey school has welcomed an NHS mental health support team to its campus.

The Romsey School has announced the addition of the NHS Mental Health Support Team (MHST), which will be based on-site.

This partnership will extend support across primary and secondary schools in the area.

The team will help Romsey School by hosting parental workshops, staff training and both small group and one-to-one therapy sessions for young people in need.

The Romsey and District MHST includes 20 schools: 17 primary and three secondary, including Mountbatten and Thornden.

The school’s senior mental health lead, Allie Clarke, said: "We are so happy to welcome Steph and her team to Romsey.

"A base at Romsey will aid vulnerable students with transitions and improve communication across schools.

"By sustaining and continually improving our approach, we aim to build stronger links with local services, increase knowledge and confidence in understanding and discussing mental health, and create a culture of openness in the workplace.

"Ultimately, our efforts are geared towards fostering resilience, character development, and aspirations among our students, leading to maintained or improved pupil attainment and overall wellbeing."

Dr Steph Smith, clinical psychologist and clinical team lead for the Romsey and District MHST, said: "We are very excited to be part of the ever-increasing number of MHSTs across the country, providing timely and early intervention to support young people across the whole age range.

"It is a proud moment to launch our new MHST in the Romsey area, which covers schools across Romsey, Eastleigh and Chandler's Ford, and joins 12 established MHST teams across Hampshire.

"We are very excited to be part of this national roll-out, and we look forward to collaboratively working with Romsey School, the other schools in our area, and parents and young people, as we start to develop an early intervention mental health strategy in your local area."

Alongside the new partnership, The Romsey School continues its long-standing relationship with Youth in Romsey, who are based in the school four days a week.

For the second consecutive year, the school is also collaborating with the Anna Freud Centre to provide one-to-one online support for students.

This initiative also includes workshops for students, parents, and staff, covering crucial topics such as anxiety in adolescence, emotional-based school non-attendance.
