Police have released a 17-year-old from Southampton after arresting him on suspicion of attempted murder in the wake of a stabbing.

On Sunday, an 18-year-old was found in Hill Lane shortly after 1am with injuries to his back and his wrist - which are thought to have been caused by a knife.

He was taken to hospital by the ambulance service.

A cordon was put in place by police outside Springhill Catholic Primary School on Milton Road.

Officers arrested a 17-year-old boy from Southampton on suspicion of attempted murder in the wake of the incident.

Hampshire police has now issued an update on the investigation.

A spokesperson for the police said: "Previously, a 17-year-old boy from Southampton had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

"He has since been released from custody and no further action taken against him.

"We are continuing to carry out extensive enquiries in the local area in relation to this matter.

"Our investigation into this matter remains ongoing.

A resident of Milton Road, who wished to remain anonymous said at the time of the arrest: "I came out of my flat and my neighbour was telling me someone had been assaulted.

“It is usually a pretty quiet road but to hear someone has been attacked is awful."
