Southampton's city centre has a wide variety of pubs that suit a range of needs, with some favouring a quieter venue.
For some the prospect of sitting down to read a book whilst nursing a pint without too much background noise is the perfect way to spend an afternoon or evening.
If you're someone who is looking to find that experience at a pub near the city centre then you have a few options.
A post on the r/Southampton Reddit page sparked a conversation around the topic with the headline: "Best quiet pint in and around the city centre?"
They added: "I've got a completely free day and am currently enjoying a coffee in town. Given that I've got nothing to do, I might grab a pint in a few hours. Where's your favourite place to enjoy a quiet pint?"
Best Southampton city centre pubs for a quiet pint
There were a few suggestions made below the post by locals, with a few receiving a couple of mentions.
One of those was The Guide Dog on Earls Road, as one person wrote: "The guide dog in Bevois valley for me the best “quiet” pub. Love reading a book and nursing a pint in there."
Another included it among their recommendations, saying: "The Titanic pub is pretty quiet too. My favourite is the Guide Dog up Bevois Valley way. Good real ale selection".
Stein Garten on the High Street was also brought up by a couple of people, as one posted: "Personally like the steingarten myself, plenty of curry houses and a decent steakhouse next door."
Another concurred, sharing: "Agree with a lot of the options already suggested - there's also Stein Garten at the bottom of town, if you fancy a German beer."
One of the more historic Southampton pubs in The Red Lion was also mentioned, with a couple commending it.
In a very positive recommendation, one wrote: "I’m quite fond of the Red Lion towards the bottom of town, historic, reasonable prices and usually pretty quiet."
Another enjoyed the atmosphere inside, as they explained: "+1 for the red lion, also has a great vibe due to the history and character of the building imo".
Two pubs that are located very close to each other on Bedford Place emerged among the contenders as well, in Bottle & Stoat and Boards & Beards.
There was a bit of debate on whether the Dancing Man Brewery fell into the category of a good city centre establishment for a quiet pint.
One person brought it up, saying: "Dancing Man, or if you fancy a short walk over the bridge Olaf’s Tun in Woolston (the latter run by the same people as Bottle and Stoat)."

Another backed this opinion, praising it for its "excellent beer" but not everyone agreed.
One person replied saying it had a "nice atmosphere" but wasn't quiet.
Meanwhile, another stated: "I second this. Lovely venue but absolutely not the place for a 'quiet' pint".
