Two men have been cleared of violent disorder after a mass brawl involving football supporters.

It comes after a fight erupted between Southampton FC and Tottenham Hotspur fans in Oxford Street last March.

Some 24 Saints fans have admitted offences in relation to the disorder.

The brawl on March 18, 2023 saw chairs and glasses being thrown between both groups of supporters.

A large crowd then moved from Oxford Street onto Queens Terrace, and police were called.

Jacob Ball, 19, of Outlands Lane, Curdridge, was on trial this week. He was at the scene but fled after being chased by Spurs supporters, Southampton Crown Court was previously told.

After a six-hour deliberation, jurors found him not guilty of the charge.

Ball was visibly relieved in the dock after the verdict was given.

His co-defendant Thomas Burke, 31, of Peverells Wood Avenue, Chandler's Ford, was later on friday found not guilty.

He thanked jurors and Judge Nicholas Rowland as he exited the dock.

Both men had denied the charges against them.

Burke told the jury he was running and protecting himself from people - and had thrown a chair in self defence.

He said Spurs fans had “weapons in their hands”, adding: “It was safety in numbers, I could not run away.

“It was all coming thick and fast and I did not know where to go.

“I was like a rabbit in the headlights.

“They had weapons so I threw my chair as a buffer and I wanted to put something between us and them.

“I ran away previously but the Spurs fans chased us.

“I was defending myself from start to finish. I do not regret my actions as I was defending myself.

“I did not commit violent disorder.”

Burke said he was "annoyed" at Saints and Spurs fans causing trouble.

He said: “It went from having a good day out to violence in Oxford Street.

“I was annoyed at Saints and Spurs fans.”
