A driver who was seriously injured in a collision on the M3 was given “amazing care” from a Southampton hospital team, his family say.

Carl Tompkins from Tadley sustained serious injuries on October 4 when the silver Honda Civic he was driving reportedly left the northbound carriageway of the M3 between junctions five and six.

It is believed that the car collided with a tree, and that the crash happened at around 10.22pm.

Mr Tompkins, 30, was treated by Southampton Hospital Neurological Intensive Care and remains in hospital.

His family are now appealing for witnesses to come forward to help in the appeal.

Hampshire Constabulary believes that several motorists, who may have witnessed the collision, stopped at the scene but left without leaving any details.

Mr Tompkins’ family said: "Thank you to those who stopped to help Carl, especially the paramedics and the air ambulance who gave him the best chance.

“Thank you also to Southampton Hospital Neurological Intensive Care and Basingstoke Hospital Intensive Care for the amazing care that you have given to Carl.

"We also want to thank all those who have already spoken to the police, but we know there may be people with further information who haven't come forward and we would urge them to do so.”

As part of police’s ongoing investigation, a 33-year-old man Basingstoke and a 34-year-old man from St Mary Bourne were arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

They have both been released under investigation while further enquiries continue.

Police believe that there are as well as people on bridges who may have seen what happened, and that there are still a number of witnesses at the scene who have not come forward.

Mr Tompkins’ family continued: "As a family we just want to get some answers to understand the events. No matter how small or insignificant it may seem, your information may fill in the gaps of the night of the collision.

"Our family would like to thank everyone for their support through this extremely difficult time."

Police are asking anyone with any information, dash cam footage or anything else relevant to the investigation to contact them.
