Southampton’s historic Bargate was transformed on Friday night as Father Christmas and his nine reindeer flew across the medieval gatehouse.

Hundreds of spectators were entertained in Southampton city centre as Britain’s Got Talent winner Sydnie Christmas performed before officially switching on Southampton’s Christmas lights alongside comedian, Kev Orkian, who will be performing in pantomime in the Mayflower Theatre production of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Following the event, Kev said: "What an incredible experience in Southampton today, turning on the Christmas lights with a brilliant audience.

"The energy, the joy, and the festive spirit were truly magical. It was amazing to see everyone out in force to share in the start of the Christmas season.

"Southampton, you never disappoint. I'm beyond excited to be returning to the iconic Mayflower Theatre this year to star alongside the amazing Ashley Banjo and the phenomenal Diversity.

"This year's show is going to be epic, packed with surprises, laughter, and unforgettable moments."

The switch-on saw animations of Father Christmas, reindeer, elves, and fairies fly and climb across the Bargate, entertaining onlookers of all ages.

Carol singers and street performers – including two dancing reindeers – added to the festivities, with the Christmas market on Above Bar Street bustling with customers.

Nat Wreford, of People’s Pride Southampton, said it was the first time the charity had had a stall at the Christmas market and were pleased to play a small part in the Christmas lights switch on.

Speaking to the Echo last night, Nat said: “It definitely seems like there’s more here than last year, although this is our first year being a part of the Christmas market.

“We’ve got a variety items from pins to bandanas, lanyards, hats, beanies, bracelets, necklaces – and then the money side of it goes back into funding us through the year to help us run other things.

“For us it’s about feeling included and making sure everyone feels welcome.

“It’s great to be a small part of tonight’s switch-on and we really have been welcomed by everyone that’s been to see us.

“I’m very impressed with how it’s gone and for us specifically being a pride stall – I was quite nervous – but we haven’t had a single issue so, I’m very happy with everything.”

As the light show was taking place, the Ferris wheel in Guildhall Square gave people the chance to view the spectacular event with a bird’s eye view.
