RESIDENTS in Highfield had to battle all the elements when flooding struck after a snow flurry yesterday, with ‘knee high’ water pouring into front gardens.

A burst main on Shaftesbury Avenue sent water gushing down the hill from Highfield Crescent, flooding driveways and causes chaos for drivers trying to make their way through.

Kelly Flynn, 29, said that the street often has flooding after rain, but that this was the worst she had ever seen it.

Kelly said: “This morning my partner opened the gate at the front of our house at around 7.30am and said the road was flooded.

“But today there hasn't been any rain and it's only got worse. I called Southern Water at 8am and they said someone would be here within two hours.

“I let it go until 10am and then I called again and they said they'd only be a few minutes.”

Southern Water confirmed to the Daily Echo that the cause of the issue was a burst water main.

“Then it got to 11am and I thought I'd try one more time and they said they were looking into it but nobody has been here all day,” Kelly said.

"My daughter is at school - 30 minutes away - and I've asked a friend to pick her up as I can't get out of my drive, it's completely thrown everything out of the window.”

Kelly explained that the entire road was affected and that many of the residents could not get out of their homes.

She said: "It's just so annoying as it keeps happening all the time and the situation doesn't improve.

A spokesperson for Southern Water said: “We’re sorry for the impact caused by a burst water main at Shaftesbury Avenue, Southampton.

“Our teams are currently on-site carrying out repairs as a matter of priority today and we aim to complete this work as quickly as possible.”

Flooding happened as Storm Bert threatens to hit Southampton, as the Met Office have issued a yellow weather warning for rain between 6am on Saturday November 23 and 11.45pm on Sunday November 24.
