A fish and chip shop in Fair Oak that sells more than 850 sausages a week has been recognised for quality food by being awarded a Good Food Award.

Lenny and Ellie Harris, 42 and 39 respectively, have been managers of Sonny’s Traditional Fish & Chips on Sandy Lane for a year and said that they were ‘over the moon’ to be handed the prestigious accolade.

The chippy has 10 members of staff and manager Lenny said that the secret is making sure everything is as fresh as it can be.

He said: “We keep out food as fresh as it can be.

"Anything that is left out for more than 10 minutes is not good enough to be sold.

“At Sonny’s I would say on average we sell around 850 jumbo sausages a week but often this can easily go right up to 950 or even 1000.

“Everything we sell is cooked to order making it as fresh as it can be.”

After joining the team as managers a year ago, Lenny and Ellie also introduced burgers to the menu which have gone down a treat with customers.

Sonny’s is even available for catering and have served food at weddings held across the city.

Ellie added: “We are so happy with this result and want to say a massive thank you to all our wonderful customers who went out of their way to vote for us.

“Our hard work and extra hours have paid off. Congratulations to all the team, we are extremely proud.”

The awards are based on customer opinion and Lenny said that this made the award all the more special.

A spokesperson for the Good Food Award said: “Our Good Food Award recognise the hard-working teams who strive for culinary excellence within their field.

“Chosen for their food quality, service and value, our prestigious Blue Ribbon is bestowed upon those with high customer votes and is known as – the Blue Ribbon for Delicious Dishes.”
