An RAF veteran who flew Lancaster Bombers and Spitfires received a guard of honour to mark a milestone birthday.

Former flight engineer Bryan Wardell celebrated his 103rd birthday on Saturday and was given a guard of honour by children of the sea cadets.

He was also joined by representatives from the military, air force, and navy, as well as the mayor and mayoress of Eastleigh at Sunnybank House in Fair Oak.

Bryan said: “I’m so happy to see so many people here today.

“It means everything to me really, to see so many people and cards.

“Yesterday some local school children were visiting me and that was lovely as well.”

As Bryan walked through the care home to the communal area of Sunnybank House – where he was presented with a birthday cake – the 103-year-old playfully stopped and inspected all those that formed a guard of honour for him to celebrate the big day.

Bryan’s son, Peter, said: “Dad has always had a wicked sense of humour, the staff here love him.

“They always have a laugh together. He’s got a phrase – from a Joe Dolce record – ‘shaddap you face.’

“He uses that quite regularly with the staff to the point where they now use it with each other.

"Dad has a love of humour and a love of life, and I think that’s kept him going all these years.”

Bryan was married to his wife Betty for more than 50 years before she passed away 20 years ago.

Peter added: “Dad was an RAF flight engineer during the Second World War and worked on the Spitfire and Lancaster.

“I often ask him if we was frightened during the war and he says: ‘I didn’t have time to be frightened.’

“He’s a remarkable man and I’m so pleased and thankful for everyone that’s made today really special.”
