A new scheme for training specialist young drivers is launching in Eastleigh.

Starting in February, Young Driver will operate lessons for 10 to 17-year-olds in the car park of Silverlake Stadium.

The scheme aims to cultivate safer drivers and previously operated in WestQuay, Southampton but has moved to the larger Eastleigh site due to high demand.

Under the scheme, youngsters are taught in dual-controlled Vauxhall Corsas and similar vehicles, with approved driving instructors.

The lessons take place in a realistic road system, including traffic signs, roundabouts, and junctions, offering a safe environment for learners to practice essential driving skills without the pressures of public roads.

The lessons are designed to be both enjoyable and educational, focusing on responsible driving.

Statistics reveal that one in five newly qualified drivers crashes within six months of passing their test.

However, for those who have taken a Young Driver course, the accident rate in the first six months drops to fewer than four per cent, marking a reduction of over 80 per cent.

Ian Mulingani, managing director at Young Driver, said: "We are excited to be launching a brilliant new venue in Eastleigh.

"High demand meant we’d outgrown the space available at WestQuay and Silverlake Stadium will enable us to almost double the number of cars we can run at an event, giving more youngsters the chance to get behind the wheel.

"It’s really easy to get to, situated just off the M27, and it’s also large enough to offer lots of different driving activities for young people, whether they’re a beginner or have already had a few lessons at another of our venues."

Lessons for 10 to 17-year-olds will commence on Saturday, February 8, and will be held on selected weekends and school holidays throughout the year.

Driving tuition is also available for disabled youngsters.

Thirty or sixty-minute lessons must be booked in advance, with prices starting from £46.99.
