More than 300 people have signed a petition to install a zebra crossing outside a Chandler's Ford school.

Parents of Fryern School in Oakmount Road, in Chandler's Ford, have submitted a petition to install a zebra crossing outside their school for safety reasons.

The Change.org petition - by 329 people - was started by parent Leah Wilkie who said that she found it “incredibly nerve-wracking” and that it was an “accident waiting to happen”.

Mrs Wilkie said: “The walk is a major safety concern for every parent whose child braves those dangerous traffic conditions daily.

"An accident is waiting to happen, and the crosswalk situation outside Fryern School needs a solution.”

In the petition, she insisted that the safety measure would provide safety not only for students but also for all members of the community who use the route daily.

She added: “Our children are the future of our society, and we must take all necessary measures to ensure their safety.

“We are urging local authorities to take immediate action on installing a zebra crossing outside Fryern School in Oakmount Road. It’s a necessary step towards protecting our children.”

Hampshire County Council has been contacted for comment on the situation.

Parent Anna Lyon added: "My children attended this school when there was a crossing control person. They made it safe for the children.

"It's a fast road and it's not safe for children to cross. If we can't have a lollypop person, make a zebra crossing."

Jayne Bacon said: "My grandchildren use this school and I want them to be safe crossing the road.

"It is needed as there is so much traffic these days and not every school has a lollipop person like they did years ago."

Joan Wilkinson added: "The zebra crossing is very important for the school children, but also for elderly and disabled people."

Gemma Tarrant said: "My daughter attends Fryern School and not having one is an accident waiting to happen."
