Tributes have been paid to a highly-respected Daily Echo journalist whose career highlights included covering Saints' victory in the 1976 FA Cup Final.
Peter East, who has died aged 81, was one of the paper's longest serving reporters when he retired in 2004 after 37 years.
Peter joined the Echo in 1967, having previously worked in Salisbury, Lincoln, and Watford.
As Chief Sportswriter, he followed Saints during the 1970s and 1980s and watched them achieve FA Cup glory under Lawrie McMenemy. He remained a lifelong fan, going to games with his children and and grandchildren.
One of his proudest moments was the publication of his book, Southampton: The Complete History of the Club, which hit the bookshelves in 1979.
In 1986, he became the paper's chief New Forest reporter, covering all aspects of life in the district.
He was a familiar face at events such as the New Forest Show and the annual Beaulieu Estate Dinner, hosted by Lord Montagu. He also covered the year-long public inquiry into plans to build a huge container terminal at Dibden Bay.

When he left the Echo 20 years ago, dozens of colleagues gathered in the newsroom to celebrate his contribution to the paper.
A few weeks later, Peter received a standing ovation at a meeting of New Forest District Council and was presented with a silver tankard.
He later worked for the Romsey Advertiser, eventually notching up 50 years as a journalist.
Peter died at his home, leaving a widow, Pat, to whom he was married for 57 years, plus daughter Jo and son Steve.

His family said: "In addition to being respected for his integrity, fair and impartial reporting, Peter was a much respected and recognisable friendly face in the community.
"Pete and Pat enjoyed their retirement and made many happy memories with friends and family.
"Walking in the New Forest or on the local beaches with his wife, children, and grandchildren was a pastime he enjoyed immensely. So, too were dinner parties at home or out and about with good friends over the years.
"Peter was an amazing storyteller and writer and had lots of funny stories about life growing up with his three brothers in West Dean, near Romsey.
"He will be remembered as a gentle, caring, clever, and funny man who loved writing."
New Forest East MP Julian Lewis added: "Peter was an exemplary journalist, professional to his fingertips, authorative, and fair-minded."
District councillor David Harrison said: "He was a great local journalist who was trusted by politicians of all colours."
