A Saints and England star has attended the official reopening of a Hampshire village pub after its new owners decided to throw a party to celebrate the occasion.

James Beattie, who played for Southampton between 1998 and 2005, was spotted at The Old George in Fair Oak at the event held by owner Grace Spencer, who runs a number of pubs in the county along with her husband Jonathan.

The pub is known in the area as a live music venue, a tradition which the Spencers are keen to continue.

Under their family-run pub group, the Spencers now own or manage seven different pubs, four of which are in Hampshire.

These include The Rising Sun in Colden Common, The Hunters in Romsey and The March Hare in Harestock, Winchester, as well as The Old George.

Mr Spencer also gave some details on his plans: "Yes, live music will absolutely continue. We’re currently finalising details with the already booked bands and will share information soon on how to apply for future dates. Keep an eye out for our upcoming post with all the details.

"The pub doors will open again this Sunday, and of course, the famous meat raffle will still be on! You’ll also notice some changes, including a reduction in prices across the board.

"For the first couple of months, not a great deal will be changing other than the above price point. And we will be bringing in an improved match-ready grey speedcloth table (like you will find in our other pubs).

"Looking ahead, we’ll be closing in January for a full refurbishment, including a complete redevelopment of the kitchen.

"Thank you for the warm welcome we’ve received so far. We’re excited to meet everyone and introduce you to your new landlord, Julian, very soon!"
