Overnight rain from Storm Conall brought widespread flooding to Southampton and the wider area with train cancellations and blocked roads that caused chaos.

Six busy roads were flooded around the city in downpours the Environment Agency considered a 'danger to life' between Chandler's Ford and Swaythling.

Thomas Lewis Way felt the wrath the worst, as the road was closed in both directions.

Out towards Eastleigh, Jason Skellen, owner of Faster PT, came up against a huge pool of water on Stoneham Lane.

Jason said: "I was on the phone to my partner when I said 'I don’t think I’m going to get through this' but I drove slowly and kept the revs up and thankfully the water didn’t affect my car, but it must have been at the maximum for my car to handle.

“I got out and could see someone’s red Fiesta had become the water's first victim and there were other cars struggling behind."

Totton and Ashurst residents were warned to protect their homes after the Met Office issued a flood alert from 5pm.

A bin lorry also fell victim to the storm on Pauletts Lane - dipping into a ditch next to massive puddles and becoming wedged in a hedge.

A Hinkler Road resident said: "I've lived here a year and it's never been like this.

"The walkway to The Range and KFC has been blocked and I've seen people walking over in the mud to get through."

Kanes Hill Primary School to close after being left with no gas or electricity.

A Thornhill resident said: "It's been a nightmare trying to avoid the puddles with the kids because they just want to walk straight through it. Hopefully it's sorted by tomorrow and there's no more rain."

The heavy weather also plagued train journeys throughout the day.

All routes through St Denys and Eastleigh were slowed by heavy rain on the tracks, and the latter was hit by a fault with the signalling system in the afternoon.

A downed tree on the railway at Romsey cancelled the evening’s services towards Salisbury too.

There was more chaos when a car and van crashed in Millbrook Road West between the junctions of Paynes Road and Regents Park Road at around 11.40am.
