A teen has been arrested after a car ploughed into the side of a couple's garage and crushed their cars - sparking safety calls.

Eugenie Codrai's quiet evening at home in Mortimers Lane, Fair Oak was shattered when a Ford drove into their garden and hit her husband Colin's vehicle.

It flipped over, smashed into their double garage and landed on both of their cars, a Volvo v40 and a Seat Ibiza, which were on their driveway.

The pair said: " It is lucky that someone wasn't killed."

In the wake of the incident, which happened at around 8.45pm on Thursday, November 21, an 18-year-old man from Eastleigh was arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle while unfit through drugs.

He has been released under investigation.

Eugenie, 78, said: "Colin was out at the cinema and I was watching the TV when I heard an almighty crash that shook the house.

"I thought somebody had broken in upstairs so I ran up there and when I looked out the window I could see lots of people standing outside.

"It was hard to believe what I saw."

Colin, 80, said they were now calling for speed restrictions on Mortimers Lane.

He said: "Throughout the day we have people going up to speeds of more than 60mph through this road.

"With all the children that go the infant and junior school nearby, there is not even a safe crossing point."

Steve Broomfield, Eastleigh Borough Councillor for Fair Oak and Horton Heath said that he would be forming a pressure group in order to get the county council's highways team to introduce speed measures on Mortimers Lane.

On Thursday, there appeared to be a breakthrough - when he told his followers on Facebook that traffic safety in the lane is now under 'serious review' by the county council.

He said: "This crash could easily have been fatal - I aim to bring this to the attention of Hampshire Highways at a county council meeting in February.

"We really want to get the community behind us to get something done about Mortimers Lane.

"I think a light controlled crossing in the road would provide a safe crossing point and deter drivers from speeding.

"A speed camera is also another possible consideration."
