An apprentice at Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour has been recognised for his outstanding contribution to the marine industry.

Oli Rickard, 24, bagged the ViewHR Award for Apprentice of the Year at the 2024 New Forest Brilliance in Business Awards.

Mr Rickard, who moved from Plymouth to begin his apprenticeship, has become a well-known figure among Beaulieu River berth and mooring holders, thanks to his proactive work ethic.

He started as a river hand and is now working towards his Level 2 Marina and Boatyard Operative qualification.

His work ranges from lifting, launching, and pressure-washing vessels to operating boats on the water.

Mr Rickard has also familiarised himself with safety regulations, performed marina maintenance tasks, and developed customer service skills to better assist boat owners and visitors.

New Forest Business Partnership said: "Oli’s dedication shone through in the glowing feedback from customers and colleagues, marking him as a true rising talent in our maritime community."

Harbour Master Wendy Stowe said: "We are so proud of Oli and that his achievements have been recognised by winning this top award.

"We look forward to sharing Oli’s outstanding skills and customer service with our Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour customers on the Beaulieu River."

Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour, where Mr Rickard is completing his apprenticeship, has recently been acknowledged as one of the UK’s best marinas.

It was listed in the top five per cent of 5 Gold Anchors winners by The Yacht Harbour Association and clinched the Marina of the Year title in the British Yachting Awards in 2022.

Currently, a £2 million redevelopment of the boatshed is in progress, creating opportunities for marine-based businesses to move into the marina.

The new facilities, including office and meeting spaces with views of the Beaulieu River, will be available to rent from spring 2025.
