A karaoke night led to the forming of a new boy band who are on the road to success. Reporter SARAH MILLS meets Caution
With great looks, friendly personalities and top vocal chords, a new boy band from the borough looks set to get on the road to stardom.
Up-and-coming musical sensation Caution were born after two members were noticed at a karaoke night held in Yates's Wine Lodge in High Road, North Finchley, one October night.
The group is made up of 25-year-old Matt Lannon, of Brett Road, Barnet; Jonathan Bremner, 20, and his brother, Leigh, 22, who both live at Curry Rise, in Mill Hill. They only got together as a band when Matt and Jonathan were overheard in Yates's singing a duet together End of the Road by Boyz2Men.
"I noticed Matt and Jonathan in a pub," said Simon Coggin, whose company Pasimic manages the pop career of Rolan Bolan son of rock legend Marc Bolan. "They sounded like they were in tune with what they were singing and seemed to work well together and, with Leigh who's joined them now, the three look and sound great as a group," says Simon, 23, of Hadley Wood.
The group admits they have always been interested in singing, but Jonathan says: "I went to boarding school so I didn't have much chance to follow my singing career there. But now we all get together at least twice a week at our Barnet studio and during the rest of the week we'll meet up in the evenings to discuss new ideas and songs for the band and we really enjoy it."
They write the songs themselves and as Jonathan says: "We all take part in writing our tunes and songs. When we look at the vocals we tend to write about personal experiences we may have had and mix these ideas in with fiction. We prefer to write our own material because then, when we sing, the whole thing holds more meaning for us."
Caution is not the most obvious name for a band but eldest member Matt explains: "A lot of people would take caution before taking on a boy band so we thought it was the best name to call ourselves. Although, once these record companies hear us we hope they'll realise what we've got to offer and take us on."
The group see themselves as a cross between Another Level, Take That and All Saints but with a difference. "Our music is kind of a mixture of soul, pop and R'n'B but we're trying to create a new thing our own identity as we don't want to copy other boy bands already out there," says Leigh, who is from a musical family. He remembers how his dad and grandfather would "sing old songs, like Mustang Sally, together using their own keyboard and guitar. But they do it for a bit of fun whereas we want to be taken seriously and hope we have got some real talent to offer."
Caution have just finished producing a demo tape at their studio. Their manager, himself a cousin of Marc Bolan, is hoping it will impress major record companies, like Virgin, Sony and EMI: "These three have definitely got what it takes to be the best boy band in the industry and I know it's only a matter of time before they are signed with a label like Sony or EMI," he said.
