LAST week, a 12-year-old lad called Adam Fitzgerald recorded a break that he will remember for many a long year. And on Thursday he produced another.
Three of England’s top young potters were reunited after clashing in the Pontin’s Prestatyn under-12 semi-finals in February.
Adam Bobat, Shane Castle and Jordan Winbourne, who live within 25 miles of each other, met again at Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club’s second under-14 Spring Tournament – but the result was the same.
Fareham’s Bobat, 11, who pocketed a staggering £1,200 in North Wales, again beat Castle in the final after trailing 1-0 and again ended Winbourne’s run in the semis.
Nine-year-old Castle fired in a fine 40 in the first frame of the day against Jordan Sainsbury, 13. Bobat responded with 47 against Harvey Dennis.
Botley’s Winbourne, 11, took the first frame in the semi but a fluked pink gifted the second to Bobat who lifted his game and took the decider.
Castle won a tight first frame in the final on the black and rattled in a 22 in the next, but Bobat leveled with a 27 and took the third with a 23.
Adam Fitzgerald, inspired by the high standard of the competition, missed out on qualifying from the group stages by one frame. But he had the consolation of chalking up a new high break of 32 against Scott Sugden and was buzzing with excitement.
We couldn’t wait to see him perform in this week’s Eastleigh and District Under-13 league. But Adam didn’t turn up. Instead, Jim Everett brought round a ‘get well’ card for us all to sign. Adam came off his bike on Thursday, smashed a tooth and broke his arm.
