One million poppies were dropped on to the QE2 this morning to mark not only the 90th anniversary of the Armistice but the Cunard vessel's last day at Southampton.
With the Duke of Edinburgh on board the ship a Tiger Moth aircraft released the poppies over the cruise liner. The Duke of Edinburgh also led the crew of QE2 in a two-minute silence to mark remembrance day.
The Duke was paying a last nostalgic visit to the liner during her final day in Southampton.
It was the seventh visit the duke has made to QE2 during her career stretching back four decades.
On his latest visit to the QE2, Prince Phillip was accompanied by the QE2 master Captain Ian McNaught as well as Cunard's president Carol Marlow.
The Duke toured the engine control room where among those he met was first electrician Christopher Tweedle and he also visited the hospital section of the ship meeting, among others, Dr Martin Carroll.
Prince Phillip went on the bridge of the vessel where he met third officer Catherine Wood and was also in the Wardroom where he met cruise director Warren Smith.
During the reception the Duke presented on behalf of Cunard a specially commissioned oil painting of QE2 to the city of Southampton as a lasting reminder of the liner's time in port.
"I have never managed to achieve my ambition of crossing the atlantic on QE2 but when she comes through Cowes, when you are out sailing, it is quite an interesting experience," said the Duke.
