TALKS are to be held at a Hampshire school into the uniform row that has erupted over pupils’ underwear.
The Parent and Teacher Association at King’s School, Winchester is expected to discuss the fallout from the row that has been sparked by furious parents who claim children are being told what colour pants and bras to wear – a claim denied by the school.
A spokesman for the PTA said an unscheduled meeting would be held if necessary to address the issue and that the subject was likely to feature on the group’s agenda when it next meets.
As reported by the Daily Echo, parents claimed that boys were told they could only wear white or black underpants and if their pants are showing above their trousers they will be asked to put on a belt.
Meanwhile, girls have been told they should only wear white, nonpadded bras underneath blouses, said parents.
The head teacher at the centre of the row has spoken about the matter for the first time. Sue Lawrence played down the issue and said it was a misunderstanding brought about by a Year 10 assembly.
In it, pupils were advised what they should wear in the working world.
She added that the school had no rules with regard to what colour underwear pupils should have.
Mrs Lawrence said: “We do not give any advice as far as underwear is concerned. It wouldn’t be appropriate for us to do so.”
The latest dispute comes just a week after a pupil was suspended from lessons at Kings’ for dyeing her hair dark brown.
