SKIING down Alpine mountains, walking a tightrope over a ravine and going ten rounds in a boxing ring.
These are just some of the daredevil activities that a group of Southampton pensioners have turned to in a bid to keep fit – and they enjoy them all in the comfort of their front room.
The energetic group have turned to technology to get their exercise, and meet once a week at Fairfax Court in Thornhill for a vigorous session on their Nintendo Wii.
As well as boxing, skiing and tightrope walking, the sprightly OAPs can often be seen enjoying a spot of virtual ten pin bowling and even hula hoop spinning.
The Wii sessions quickly became a hit at the Hinkler Road house after they were introduced by Age Concern Southampton as a novel way of keeping pensioners active.
Fairfax Court resident June Caplin said it was a fun way to keep fit and make new friends.
The 75-year-old said: “We really enjoy playing the Wii Fit.
“My favourite is ten pin bowling but I like watching the men play boxing. It’s a bit of fun and a bit of exercise.
“I never thought I’d be playing computer games at my age but I’ve already told my kids I want a Wii for Christmas!”
Ross Borman from Age Concern Southampton added: “We’re trying to encourage people to become more active physically and socially – and the Wii Fit does both of those.
“We hope it is something that we can roll it out across the city.”
