HAMPSHIRE police force has been named the most gayfriendly public sector employer in the country.
The constabulary is today ranked the second best place in the country for lesbian, gay and bisexuals to work.
It is the fourth year the force has featured in the annual survey by Stonewall, a gay rights lobby group.
It lists the 100 organisations best committed to eliminating discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation.
Chief constable Alex Marshall said: “A huge effort has gone into this organisation in recent years to make sure people feel comfortable and valued.
“For a police force, such recognition is hugely important.
“I’m delighted that people from a gay, lesbian and bisexual background feel comfortable joining us, that they’ll be valued within the organisation, and that their skills, along with everyone else’s, will be recognised.”
The application to Stonewall was submitted by members of the force’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered resource group.
Inspector Paula Hennighan- Finlay, who leads the group, said: “If our police officers and staff can feel comfortable about their sexuality at work, I think that will also encourage prospective employees from other minority backgrounds.”
