A plan to inject millions of pounds into a rundown Hampshire estate has taken a major step forward.
Gosport’s Rowne complex was once named as the worst estate in the country and has been desperately crying out for a new image.
After more than 15 months of public consultation, changes and commercial negotiations, Rowner’s £140 million regeneration scheme has now landed in the planners in tray at Gosport Council.
If the plans get the green light demolition and building work is expected to start on phase one, near Howe Road, in the middle of this year.
The masterplan has been divided into eight building phases with the last one expected to be finished in 2016.
The council’s deputy leader Peter Chegwyn said: “Our planning department will be reviewing all aspects of the details and this is expected to take 13 weeks.
“The Rowner Renewal Partnership has consulted well with the local community and stakeholders and we hope the masterplan will be accepted.
“I like many others are looking forward to the new Rowner and the continued support of the local community.”
Hampshire County Council leader Councillor Ken Thornber said: “I am very pleased that the proposals have reached this important milestone.
“ I would particularly like to pay tribute to the partners for this vision and hard work in moving forward these plans in such difficult times.”
Whitehall has so far invested more than £3 million into the Rowner redevelopment and will be pumping in a further £4 million over the next two years.
The scheme has also been given a £2 million boost from the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire.
