HAMPSHIRE firefighters have today issued an urgent warning following the death of a family pet dog after it plunged through a frozen pond.
The family of four was out walking the dog just before 8.30am this morning, when it fell through the ice on Hatchet Pond in Beaulieu.
The drama happened at the spot where scores of people have been venturing onto the ice with skates throughout the weekend, ignoring safety warnings.
Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of fire crews from Beaulieu and Eastleigh, who spent more than 15 minutes trying to resuscitate the small dog, the pet died at the scene.
The incident is one of several over the weekend which have seen people rescued by fire crews.
In the early hours of this morning a woman had to be plucked from mud just off Weston Shore in Southampton.
Firefighters received an emergency call at 3.30am and had to use special equipment to retrieve the woman who was 10 metres out from the shoreline.
She was freed after 20 minutes and did not need hospital treatment.
