HE was an inspirational teacher whose strict approach to discipline was matched by his ability to impart knowledge.
Howard Miles was an imposing presence at Noadswood School, Dibden Purlieu, where he was famous for his stern “You, boy!” rebuke.
However, Mr Miles, 65, who taught at the school for 34 years, never lost the respect and admiration of his pupils.
Now more than 1,000 tributes have been left on a social networking website following his death from cancer.
One former student describes him as “the most respected teacher of all time”.
Another writes: “Mr Miles was probably the only teacher who could keep me in line.”
Mr Miles, of Lymington, held several posts at the school, including head of English, head of year and assistant head teacher.
He stopped teaching six years ago but stayed on as exams officer.
