PLANTS in the are being ripped out of the ground and destroyed to prevent the spread of a disease dubbed Sudden Oak Death.
A number of rhododendron bushes beside the famous Rhinefield Ornamental Drive near Brockenhurst were found to be infected.
The disease, phytophthora ramorum, has killed thousands of trees in the United States since it was discovered several years ago. British trees are not thought to be susceptible but the Forestry Commission is taking no chances.
The infected plants are being removed and walkers are being urged to stay on the footpaths.
Trees and shrubs within a three-kilometre radius of the bushes are being monitored for any sign of the disease.
