HAMPSHIRE residents have spoken of their misery after drains flooded their road with raw sewage.

The effluence – including tampons and condoms – poured out of storm drains along Chestnut Avenue in Eastleigh yesterday morning following heavy rain.

According to resident Gary Yates, the sewage returns every time it rains – but despite his efforts to get something done about it, the problem still exists.

It comes a day after we reported how residents in nearby Fair Oak Road found themselves ankle deep in human waste twice in eight days after storm drains flooded.

Gary, 49, said: “When we moved in 18 months ago we were so excited and loved our new house to bits – but then we had some heavy rain, and right outside our drive a huge puddle formed.

“Raw sewage began bubbling out of the gully drain in front of our house.

“It’s what confronts us most mornings after heavy rain – sometimes it happens even if there hasn’t been any rain. It is a major health hazard and the smell is horrendous.

Gary, a director of a vintage car restoration company, first complained to Eastleigh Borough Council eight months ago – but the problem remains. He added: “I don't know what else I can do now apart from take legal action."

A spokesman for Eastleigh Borough Council said: “We are aware of the problem and we are in touch with Hampshire County Council Highways department to investigate the matter.”

A Highways spokesman said: “Engineers are investigating the problem and working to resolve it.”

■ Eastleigh councillor Chris Thomas, chairman of the Local Area Committee, has called a meeting of the drainage subgroup, open to the public, on February 5 at 7.30pm at Eastleigh Civic Offices.
