A BUSY part of a Hampshire town centre remains sealed off today after a man’s body was found early this morning.
Sniffer dogs and forensic officers have been scouring the scene all morning after town centre security guards made the grisly discovery near Basingstoke’s Anvil theatre footbridge at 2.40am.
Detectives from the major crime department have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses.
The eastbound stretch of Churchill Way has been closed from the Victory Roundabout and both ends of the Churchill Way footbridge have been sealed off.
The road is expected to be closed for most of the day and motorists are being warned to expect traffic disruption, as the route is one of the major roads into the town.
Detective Chief Inspector Colin Mathews, of the Major Crime department, said: “At this stage we are investigating a number of lines of enquiry.
“It is too early to determine a cause of death or for any identification to have taken place.
“We would appeal for anyone who knows anything about this incident to contact police as soon as possible.”
Anyone with information about the incident should contact the Major Crime Department, at Grosvenor House, Basingstoke, on 0845 045 4545 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
