Hundreds of potential merchant navy officers attended an open day in Hampshire looking into a career at sea.
A ship simulator, sea survival demos and a pyrotechnic display were all part of the open day at Southampton Solent University’s Warsash Maritime Academy.
The merchant navy can also lead to a life ashore in either maritime insurance or law and possibly as a pilot.
Representatives of more than 90 shipping companies attended the day as they look to fill the gap of around 34,000 officers needed world-wide.
Training, usually sponsored by shipping companies, lasts three years leading to a HND or foundation degree.
