IT was a heartless act of animal cruelty.

Callous pet owners threw nine rabbits from a car window in the New Forest before fleeing the scene.

The RSPCA were called in after a member of the public saw the rabbits being launched from a silver car stopped at the side of Brockishill Road in Bartley.

Fears have now been raised that the uncaring pet owners may have other animals in their care.

Luckily the ordeal was spotted by a passer-by who managed to round up seven of the nine rabbits.

Another rabbit was caught by RSPCA inspector Jo Story but the ninth animal could not be found.

It is believed the driver of the car, thought to be either a silver Astra or a Ford Escort, was frightened off when they noticed the passer-by.

Inspector Story said: “This was a heartless and brutal act and it is lucky that the animals were not badly injured.

“We are concerned that whoever is responsible may have other animals in their care and I would urge anyone with any information about this incident or who recognises the car involved to contact us so we can prevent further animals from suffering.”

Six of the rabbits were left with cuts and bruises, and are now recovering at Ashley Heath RSPCA Animal Centre near Ringwood.

The seventh animal was taken to another RSPCA centre.

Sadly, one of the rabbits had to be put down to prevent it from suffering further.

Nicola Anthony, a supervisor at the centre, added: “It is so lucky that the rabbits were found.

“Many people think domestic rabbits can survive in the wild but they would be very easy targets for foxes and would not have lasted long.”

The shelter is now looking for new homes for the adult rabbits.
