The Chief Secretary to the Treasury Yvette Cooper spent her time in Hampshire at a Sure Start in Gosport.
Ms Cooper spent time with parents and children at the Rowner Children’s Centre.
The MP for Pontefract, Castleford and Knottingley, who is a mum of three herself with husband Ed Balls, wanted to see the estate after hearing of its problems in 2005 while filming for Panorama.
The Rowner estate is currently undergoing a £140m regeneration scheme set to be completed in 2016.
She said: “The area is making huge progress, the Sure Start centre is brilliant. It’s supporting families, helping mums and helping dads.
“It gives the residents a place to talk and you can see the real difference that it has made and the huge transformation it has undergone.”
