AN investigation has been launched by the Environment Agency after a suspected oil leak at Fawley Refinery.
The agency was contacted by Esso after fuel oil spilled from a fractured pipeline last night.
A spokesman from the agency said: "The leak was quickly isolated and contained on the Fawley site and, while there is no evidence that any oil has entered Southampton Water, temporary oil booms have been deployed to ensure any potential oil pollution is contained.
"Once we were told about the incident we attended the scene and investigated any potential oil pollution and harm to the environment. At this time it looks as though the oil leak was stopped before it had the opportunity to enter Southampton Water. We will maintain a presence on site to monitor the situation and advise on pollution prevention."
