A HAMPSHIRE street has missed out on being crowned Britain’s greenest road.
The people of Green Lane, Bursledon, reduced their energy consumption by 23.18 per cent and shaved hundreds of pounds off their fuel bills as part of the national Green Streets Challenge.
But they finished sixth out of eight, behind streets in Leeds, Edinburgh, Plymouth, Birmingham and Cardiff.
Over the past 12 months, eight families on eight roads, all with ‘Green’ in their address, followed simple instructions – such as not leaving televisions on standby and taking showers instead of baths – in a bid to reduce their energy consumption.
Green Lane, in Cookridge, Leeds, scooped the £50,000 prize for cutting consumption by 35 per cent in the challenge.
British Gas managing director Phil Bentley said: “The householders on our Green streets throughout the UK have been inspirational in showing us how we can all be greener and save money. It’s up to all of us to follow their lead.”
