FOUR out of ten of Hampshire’s head teachers could retire over the next three years, a council report has warned.
An ageing workforce and recruitment difficulties will cause a shortage of school leaders, it has been claimed.
Figures show that 40 per cent are due to retire between 2009 and 2012.
As a result, some small primary schools in rural areas such as the New Forest and southern parishes of Winchester district may have to share head teachers, according to county education boss Cllr David Kirk.
Golden handshakes Other initiatives being considered include “golden handshakes” to attract new recruits to Hampshire, and retired heads working part-time to mentor deputies in leadership roles.
