A 16-month-old baby died after contracting the superbug MRSA.
Lilie Mae Thorn died at home in Pennington in the New Forest, after wounds on her left hand became infected.
The toddler had come home from hospital after having surgery to help treat the birth defect known as claw hands, and had been given a clean bill of health hours before she died, Southampton Coroner’s Court heard.
It was the second operation that she had undergone for the rare congenital deformity after having treatment to her right hand.
The inquest heard how despite being seen by her doctor, there were no signs of an infection before she died in her sleep early the following morning.
