A WOMAN who was hit by a truck on a pedestrian crossing on the Isle of Wight this morning has died.
The 56-year-old woman was struck by a blue Mercedes Benz flatbed truck on the crossing in Parkhurst Road in Newport at 8.13am.
A spokeswoman for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police said the woman had suffered "extremely serious injuries" and had been rushed to St Mary's Hospital in Newport where she died at 8.45am.
The crash has caused huge delays on the road, which links Newport with Cowes.
Road closures have been put in place to allow for forensic officers to examine the route, which police are warning will remain in place until at least 1pm.
A spokeswoman added roadworks at Hunnyhill were adding to the disruption.
