IT was a night to roll out the red carpet when some serious DJ royalty came to town.
Globetrotting record collector Gilles Peterson brought his Worldwide party to Orange Rooms for a totally mesmerising set.
He kept his fans waiting before unlocking a vinyl treasure chest and joining the dots between soulful house, hypnotising Latin jams, bustling broken beats and deep-dug funk soul gems.
The veteran Radio 1 DJ is still at the cutting edge, like a musical magpie picking through long forgotten archives and creating tastes for a global audience.
Through his labels Acid Jazz, Talkin’ Loud and Brownswood Recordings, he has been associated with the careers of countless artists including Erykah Badu and Jamiroquai.
He plucks tunes from musical hot beds like the clubs and dance halls of Sao Paulo, Philadelphia and London.
And somehow he always unearths blissful tracks that – had he not found them gathering dust in some New York charity shop – may have been lost in the midst of time.
His impeccable taste was there for all to hear when a small but appreciative Orange Rooms crowd gathered around his DJ booth.
It may have lasted little more than an hour, but his kaleidoscopic set left us all clamouring for more.
