NEARLY 80,000 tonnes of glass: that’s how much the Recresco plant in Southampton processed last year.

The glass-recycling plant at ABP’s Western Docks is “booming”, according to reports published by the company.

The company brings in bottles from different counties in the south, including Hampshire, Dorset and Surrey.

Once recycled, the glass is transported to various bottle manufacturers to be used again.

ABP also transports glass to France, Portugal and Spain.

An aim of ABP is to reduce traffic on roads, by running lorries at maximum load capacity.

Glass is also transported by sea, going in and out of the harbour shipping over 400 tonnes of glass an hour.

Sue Simmonite, development and environment manager at ABP, said: “It’s good to see that the recycling plant at the port is so busy as our community is supporting the drive to recycle and re-use more.

“It’s also great news that ships leaving the port are taking recyclable material away in such large volumes.”
