THE controversial Street View in Google Maps has been extended to cover Southampton.

The online mapping service now allows users to see large parts of the city as they would if they were walking along the road.

Faces and car number plates have been obscured in an attempt to protect the privacy of members of the public who may have been photographed by the Google Car.

The vehicle drove around the city last year taking 360-degree images of Southampton roads.

As reported in the Daily Echo earlier this year, critics of the service say it is an invasion of privacy.

Not every street in the city has been covered, with large parts of Shirley and Weston not included in the new 3D view.
