THE nearly-lost songs of Hampshire will be revived at a concert near Winchester tomorrow.
Preston Candover Village Hall will host a selection of music from the local area. Entitled The Axford Women, it consists of traditional songs collected from five local women 100 years ago by song collector George Gardiner.
Organisers say that the songs are a wonderful part of Hampshire cultural heritage. Collectors were only just in time to note down the songs that had nearly died out by 1907.
The songs had been sung for hundreds of years, but had become unfashionable with the younger generations by late Victorian times.
The folk group Craig-Morgan-Robson are combining with the young duo the Askew Sisters. They will be singing songs collected from Sarah Goodyear, Marty Munday, Elizabeth Randall, Charlotte Hall and Emma Hopkins.
The concert starts at 7.30pm.
