At 11.40pm on April 14, 1912, RMS Titanic struck an iceberg near Newfoundland in the North Atlantic and just a little less than three hours later she sank. Of the 1,523 people who lost their lives, 549 came from Southampton, leaving a devastating effect on the people left behind.

Throughout April:

  • Titanic, Southampton Remembers exhibition Venue: Maritime Museum, Town Quay Road, Southampton.

    Times: Mondays: closed; Tuesdays to Fridays: 10am-4pm; Saturdays: 10am-4pm; Sundays: 1pm-4pm. The first floor of the Maritime Museum has been transformed with a new exhibition to commemorate the Titanic tragedy. This permanent, unique display tells the story of her crew, the majority of whom came from Southampton.

  • Titanic research material Venue: Southampton Central Library, Civic Centre. Times: Monday-Friday, 9.30am-7pm; Saturday: 9.30am-4pm, Sundays: closed. Entry: free.
  • From April 1 to April 30: Titanic Crew Exhibition Venue: Southampton Central Library, Civic Centre. Times: 9.30am-5pm. Sundays: closed. Entry: free. A display of material that highlights the impact the loss of the liner had on the local community.
  • Saturday, April 4: The British Titanic Society’s Exhibition. Venue: Holiday Inn, Herbert Walker Avenue, Southampton. Times: 9am-4pm.
  • Wednesday, April 15: Titanic Discovery Family Day. Venue: Tudor Merchant’s Hall, Westgate, Southampton. Times: 10.30am-2.30pm. Entry: free, but bookings must be made in advance on 023 8083 2705. Actress Joanna Russel and the museum education team offer a fun-packed day of Titanic proportions.
  • Thursday, April 16: Local History Forum talk with Roy Doughty – Managing the New Technology: Wireless Communication and its role in the loss of the Titanic. Venue: Northguild Lecture Theatre (access via Art Gallery and Library entrance), Civic Centre. Time: 7pm. Entry: free.
  • Friday, April 17: Titanic Trail. Venue: starts at Holy Rood, City Centre, Southampton. Time: 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. Entry: free but by advanced booking only on 023 8057 1858.
  • Graves Walk. Venue:The Old Cemetery, Southampton Common, off Hill Lane, Southampton. Time: 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Entry: free, but you must book in advance on 023 8067 1083 or 023 8034 9414.

  • Saturday, April 18: Post Office Titanic plaque unveiling. The unveiling of the 1912 Post Office plaque in its new position in the Civic Centre Foyer. Time: 11.30am-12 noon Entry: free.

First lecture by Claes-Goran Wetterholm speaking on Those Travelling 3rd Class on Titanic. The second lecture is by a member of the National Oceanography Centre talking about Under the ice.
