COMMUTERS and businesses face misery when a major route into Winchester is closed.

Southern Gas Networks (SGN) will begin a six-week project to upgrade gas mains under Bar End Road on Monday.

It will mean a section of the route between Milland Road and Wharf Hill will be blocked off and traffic diverted in and out of the city via Alresford Road, adding around four miles to commuters’ journeys.

John Cake, a construction manager at SGN, said: “This investment will mean that the area’s gas supply will continue to be secure and reliable into the future.”

Access to Highcliffe, Wharf Hill and Chesil Street car parks will be maintained during the works.

The project will involve replacing around 220m of metallic gas mains with modern plastic pipe, which has a minimum lifespan of 80 years.
