HAMPSHIRE County Council scooped a prestigious national award in the Government Business Awards for its environmentally friendly work.

The awards, which recognise local authorities demonstrated sound business judgement and operational expertise, were held at the Emirates Stadium in London on Thursday.

The award entry told how the county council moved the concept of sustainability from the fringes to the heart of the organisation with projects such as an ambitious staff engagement programme called 9 Lives.

Nine staff, over nine weeks, undertook nine challenges to live a more sustainable lifestyle at work and at home, by changing everything from reducing waste going out and about to explore Hampshire’s countryside. The council further extended this to outside organisations and businesses that it works with. From stipulating that building contractors use sustainable materials in its 500 schools to catering service sourcing local and organic food for the 42,000 children who eat school meals.

Council leader Councillor Ken Thornber: “I am so proud that staff from all over the county council are consistently winning national awards for their innovative and excellent work.

“These accolades bear testimony to the high standards and quality services that our staff deliver daily to the people of Hampshire.”
