Southampton’s lead up to the 2012 Olympic games in London left the starting blocks with the opening of a unique exhibition at the City Art Gallery in the Civic Centre, yesterday.
Trampolinists, amateur boxers and an Olympic medallist were on hand to help unveil the Southampton City Council event being staged until the end of May.
A Century of Olympic Posters which was set to be opened by local Olympic diver, Peter Waterfield, features all the art-work and pictures, including work by David Hockney and Andy Warhol, that have been used to promote and highlight previous games.
Drawn mainly from the Victoria and Albert Museum’s internationally renowned collection of posters, the exhibition includes many rare examples, most of which are together for the first time.
Councillor John Hannides, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Heritage, said: “The Olympic Games creates so much excitement right across the world.“I think this exhibition will give people a unique perspective of the modern Olympic Games.”
The exhibition will be on display until May 31.
