POLICE and the fire service have launched a joint investigation into an arson attack that destroyed two cars in Southampton early today - but the damage could have been much worse.
St Marys firefighters were called to a private compound in Canute Road at about 3am to find a Peugeot had been set light and the blaze had then engulfed an adjacent Rover.
However the crew was able to prevent from the flames reaching about a dozen other vehicles parked in the same lot.
"Our main problem was stopping the leaking fuel from spreading which we did with high pressure hoses," said a spokesman.
The crew was at the scene for about an hour.
