COUNCIL care bosses in Southampton have revealed they plan to hire about 25 more social workers and five managers to tackle a sharp rise in child protection cases, particularly domestic violence.
Councillors have budgeted an extra £800,000, rising to £1.5m by 2012, for the new staff.
A recent inspection found backlogs of reviews and assessments in child protection cases. The rise in cases referred to social services has been linked to the economic downturn.
