A SOUTHAMPTON MP has backed the Daily Echo’s Stop This Tax campaign by calling for an urgent review of the tax threatening to force business away from the city’s port.
Fears have been raised that some of the port’s bigger customers could see their bills rise by 67 per cent under proposals for the tax levied on ships to pay for lighthouses.
Southampton Test MP Alan Whitehead is to meet the Transport Minister behind the ongoing consultation about changes to light dues, to urge for a complete overhaul of the system.
Jim Fitzpatrick has put forward four proposals, but the Government is favouring the one that raises most cash.
