A GRANDMOTHER died when she fell down a flight of stairs and broke her back on Christmas morning, an inquest heard.
Dorothy Withers, who was 91, fell down the stairs at her daughter Prudence Hockley’s house in Blackfield in the early hours of the morning.
Mrs Withers lived in Newbury but was staying with her daughter and family in Charnwood Way for Christmas.
A statement from Mrs Hockley was read at the inquest at Southampton Coroner’s Court.
It said her son Andrew heard his grandmother get up at about 2.15am on December 25 to go to the bathroom. On her return to bed, she took a wrong turn in the dark and fell down the stairs.
Pathologist Patrick Gallagher told the inquest the cause of death was a spinal fracture. Coroner Keith Wiseman recorded a verdict of accidental death.
