WATER bosses have spent £3.5m revamping a treatment plant in a bid to improve the cleanliness of a Hampshire river.

A new storm tank, inlet chamber and balancing screen have been installed at King’s Somborne as part of moves to help improve the environment of the River Test.

Southern Water says the new equipment was needed so water recycled back into the river would meet tough environmental standards.

Part of the project included the installation of a new 750mm out fall from the treatment works to the waterway.

Heather Jones, Southern Water engineer, said: “We are delighted to have completed this investment to improve the efficiency of our treatment works at King’s Somborne to ensure the quality of the water we recycle to the River Test is of the highest quality.

“This will help protect the environment and the river from the harmful effects of excessive plant and algal growth.”

The treatment works serves more than 2,300 residents and can clean up to 32 litres of water per second.
